Saturday Links: Smoking Edition

A Michigan State University professor published the first evidence of an asthmatic dying after exposure to secondhand smoke. Apparently, while we all know the dangers of secondhand smoke to people with asthma, this is the first known evidence of an immediate, fatal effect. MSU researchers are studying links between the workplace, asthma, and fatalities in each. Do you suppose if they uncover more incidences like this one, the complaints about anti-smoking laws inhibiting personal freedom may start to pale next to the argument that secondhand smoke can inhibit, well, life for asthmatics?

Not all states have comprehensive anti-smoking laws. These are the 23 that do. (Notice Michigan isn’t on the list.)

Finally, have you ever heard of Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights? It’s the driving force behind indoor air quality legislation. Check out the links for education, research, and action if your state doesn’t make the list above and you’d like to help.
