The Power to Regrow Body Parts
Yes, regrow the way lizards can with their tails. And actual body parts from your actual human body. CBS reports on several fronts of regenerative medicine, and you have to read the story to believe it. The article opens with Lee Spievack, who regrew the tip of his finger in just four weeks when he sprinkled it with a powder called extracellular matrix, from pig bladders.
Is This Food Cruel and Unusual Punishment? You Decide.
On Monday, the Vermont Supreme Court heard the case of inmates protesting the use of Nutraloaf, a complete meal-in-a-loaf used as *behavior modification* (prison’s words) or *punishment* (the prisoners’). Nutraloaf isn’t new, and neither are lawsuits against it. Here’s the ingredient list to help you understand why:
- Whole wheat bread cubes
- Nondairy cheese (?)
- Raw carrots
- Spinach
- Raisins
- Beans
- Vegetable oil
- Tomato paste
- Powdered milk
- Dehydrated potato flakes
Yep. All that, all in a loaf.

Oh, and horses aren’t allowed in this hospital.
Just dogs and cats.

That nutro loaf stuff sounds horrible. But at least it’s got some nutrition. Would you be able to eat it with the fake cheese?
Hello! You might not remember me but I left a comment a long time ago about asthma journals. I just wanted say THANKS! to the poster “Asthmagirl” forthe link!
These weird health posts are great too!
Asthmagirl,
The legal argument of the stuff aside, I bet it works fabulously as a deterrant for problem behavior. I’d sure do anything to avoid eating it—I can’t even figure out what “nondairy cheese” could possibly be.
Hello again, Claire, and welcome back—
So glad you found what you needed here, and many thanks.
Well, I guess I must be weird. That nutri loaf sounds good! Spinach, raisins, carrots? Hey – even the non-dairy cheese. Which is just that – cheese made from soy or something else. Probably tasty when combined with all the rest.
Growing your own limbs definitely sounds whacky. But – in this day and age of cloning, you never know!!
Happy Spring!
I’m so excited for you! New Orleans… I have never been but I bet the food is to die for. You won’t be thinking of truffles and cheesecake while you’re there I bet!
Promise to tell me about it when you get back!
