Make Money to Celebrate Earth Day, Plus Other Green Ideas

What a day we’ve got lined up – the Pennsylvania primary, Earth Day, Andrew Lloyd Webber night on American Idol (This last one scares me. It really does. Syesha and Carly, THAT MEANS YOU.)

Anyway, Earth Day here means a little self-promotion to some past posts and a little linkage to some of the more subtle green lifestyle changes you can make.

Because recycling, forgoing the gas-greedy SUV, putting the fork down when it comes to meat? Those are all old ideas, aren’t they? Worth making, yes, but ones we’ve heard before.

Check out some other ways to prompt a more eco-friendly lifestyle:

Invest in renewable energy.
This one would be a no-brainer if it weren’t for the element of risk. Best-case scenario for buying stocks in emerging green technologies and solutions? You bulk up and help secure your own financial future and invest in global change at the same time. I’m no master of finance, so go read some people who are, instead. Here’s how hot renewable energy stocks are right now, and here’s why investing in wind energy or solar power makes good economic sense. Even Google’s getting into the game, and Wired’s Alexis Madrigal explains how higher oil prices are at work.

Give up the room sprays and potpourri.
Because you can make your own, of course. And by “make” I mean, “bring outside stuff inside, and stick it in a bowl.” Really, it’s easier than you think.

So you’re not a natural redhead? You can still get that color naturally.
Try henna. It’s non-toxic and it really works, but only if you use the right stuff and and use it the right way. I used it for 3 years and got a more gorgeous color than I ever had with chemical dyes.

I drink your milkshake!
I’m sorry. I know I’m like the nine millionth blogger to make that joke, but I couldn’t restrain myself.

Anyway, Tampa-based EVOS, the environmentally friendly and healthier-than-normal fast food chain is giving out free low-fat organic milkshakes today. Normally, I wouldn’t suggest practicing consumerism to celebrate Earth Day, but EVOS is a better fast food joint than most. It’s super-sustainable, uses wind energy (thought not solely) and recycled paper, and makes a sincere effort to use pure-as-possible ingredients. So if you’re out in CA, FL, GA, NV, and NC today – thirsty and planning to drink something that comes in a disposable container anyway – you may as well get something for free.
