Today, NASA turns 50 years-old.
First Internal Pacemaker
Also fifty years ago, but on October 8 instead, Dr. Ake Senning implanted a cardiac pacemaker in a patient for the first time. (external ones had been used since 1950). It lasted eight hours and interestingly enough, the recipient would end up with a total of 20 pacemakers over the course of his lifetime.
The War of the Worlds Radio Broadcast
October 30 marks the 70th anniversary of Orson Welles’ infamous radio adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel, a version that simulated news broadcasts of an alien invasion and scared the crap out of many Americans. (Although probably not as many Americans as urban legend suggests.)
Anytime I’m tempted to giggle over those silly, naive listeners who did fall for the gag, I remember how easily I scare and how I’d probably have barricaded myself in a basement somewhere with canned food and a flashlight.
–Finally, here’s the most anatomical cake you’ve probably ever seen. The red velvet heart cake, commemorating the anniversary of The AntiCraft:
