So many good links today and all of them about food:
Asthmatics: Don’t Eat Too Many Fried Bugs
Actually, this is kind of serious. In Thailand, where citizens can buy fried insects at street stalls, 118 people ended up in the hospital between mid-December/early January. The insects contain a hefty dose of histamine that can cause asthma flares and allergic reactions.
Candy Therapy
As the economy gets worse and worse, those in the know (read: candy store owners and industry experts) say people are eating more candy as a low-cost indulgence. Candy store owners are not only still profitable, but they’re also seeing business increase. If adults are buying more candy to feel better right now, according to this New York Times article, nostalgia as well as taste is probably playing a part since the most popular reported candies are older ones. And apparently there’s a precedent for the dismal economy/sweet, sweet candy link: candy companies stayed profitable back in the Great Depression, too.

I include this one only because, well, yeah.

Bacon Eggs
Like most people, I love bacon more than I should. But this is just gross.

Wow. That bug thing is bizarre. Although, I always think it’s funny what we decide we will and won’t eat.
That’s intersting about bugs. I wonder if chinese asthmatics are cautious about eating cockroaches.
I read recently that there is histamine in alcohol too. That stuff is popping up in all sorts of unexpected places.
I think I’m in no danger of eating bugs. And that bacon thing… I love bacon, but that was kind of disgusting.
Histamine in alcohol? That’s pretty surprising.
I have to say–Andrew Zimmern almost sold me on fried grasshopper tacos one night. Then again, that guy will eat anything.
I really liked your blog! Praise Bacon and Hallelujah
