Hi Asthma Mom and followers,
Is there a distinction made between active asthmatics and those with a dormant condition when it comes to being considered “high risk” for H1N1 infection? I’m a twenty-five-year-old who has suffered no symptoms of asthma and taken no medication for the condition for nearly fifteen years. While I’m ready to line up as soon as the vaccine is made available, I’m not sure if I should consider myself a high risk candidate and, therefore, deprive someone of the limited vaccine who needs it more than I do. All the online literature I’ve found on vaccine policy places asthmatics in one general camp of high risk. Any thoughts?
Someone please talk me down off the ledge. My “M” tested positive for H1N1 on Friday. We have been fever free for 2 days BUT…the cough is killing me. This is the first time she has EVER had an illness and no wheezing. My bag is packed. I am ready for the 3 am ER trip. But still no tugging. I can’t live waiting for the other shoe to fall. How long is this cough going to last? Does the nebulizer help? Our dr. said it wouldn’t hurt but won’t do much. Could this still develope into something else? When do I send her back to school?
Robert–That’s a fantastic question, and thanks for asking it. I have no idea about the answer, but I’ll ask around and post if I get any answers.
Allison–I’m the owner/author of this site and I can relate–the cough’s a bad one. If you check the comments on this post, I left some information about how long the cough lasted for me (non-asthmatic), my older daughter (asthma), and my younger one. (no asthma) We don’t use a nebulizer b/c we don’t notice much difference b/t what an inhaler/spacer combo, but some parents do.
Total time w/coughing for my asthmatic daughter was a little over 2 weeks, and the second half of that was after she recovered from the actual flu symptoms. Her coughing was very bad throughout, but didn’t develop into anything worse. I sent her back to school after all other symptoms left (actual flu lasted about a week) and once her peak flow numbers stayed in the green consistently.
