I’m staying home for Thanksgiving this year, and it feels awfully festive to live somewhere, finally, that’s actually cold this time of year. On Thursday, I plan to drink hot apple cider and watch the Macy’s parade before heading out to my in-laws’ for dinner, and I’ll be wearing a sweater and loving the cold air and I won’t miss all those previous Florida Thanksgivings in sandals even a little bit.
Especially last year’s holiday, which the girls and I spent on the beach when we really wanted to be here, near the mountains.
If you’re headed out of town for Thanksgiving, check out my previous post on traveling with asthma, including some good reader tips in the comment section.
And be forewarned if you’re flying on American Airlines or US Airways this week. Both companies still charge rebooking fees on nonrefundable tickets for sick passengers, a restrictive policy that ups the risk of people with H1N1 boarding your plane. If you’ve got tickets for either airline, I’d pack some masks along in my carry-on if I were you.
Actually, I’d do that anyway during this crazy-busy travel week, even if you fly on Delta, AirTran, or United, all of which follow the healthier, more flexible policy of waiving cancellation/rescheduling fees for sick passengers with doctors’ notes.
While swine flu is no 1918 Spanish Flu, it is extremely contagious, and an airline cabin is a closed environment.
