Notes from an Asthma Kid
Hi!
Okay, you know I have asthma (duh).

Well, I also have stomach problems. I HATE IT! I hate having to be careful about what I eat so I don’t start puking. Like if I have spaghetti or pizza or something like that with a lot of acid, I can’t eat chocolate the same day. If I eat too much popcorn it makes my gastritis come back, too, and I love eating popcorn at the movies. I hate that when I DO puke all night, it’s literally ALL NIGHT. I mean, I can’t even sleep!

I also have glasses. I always have to remember where I put them at night so I can find them again in the morning. Sometimes when I’m having a bad hair day, I think I look stupid with my glasses. And if I don’t have time to put my contacts in, I have to wear my glasses when I don’t feel like it.

Sometimes, it feels like I have EVERYTHING in the world, and my sister seems to have nothing. I don’t want her to have this stuff–I just hate having it.

Okay,, I think I’ve said “hate” about 15 times now.
I am really glad that I don’t have something even harder, like autism. My cousin has autism, and the kids at his school who don’t know him probably don’t always understand why he’s doing certain things. I’m also really, really glad that my asthma isn’t as bad as it could be because I can usually still run and do the stuff I want to do.

See you later–
AG

I feel like I’m reading about an older version of my little girl. She has stomach issues, and asthma, and just got glasses over the summer. I think she agrees with you that she hates it all (well, maybe not the glasses…she really LIKES her glasses right now.)
It’s actually really good that you know what sets off your stomach. Mariella isn’t really good with that yet, and she gets a little upset when I say “you probably don’t want to eat that right now…it will probably bother your belly”
I’m really impressed with how you seem to handle it all. I hope that my little girl will be able to know what needs to be done, and do it when she gets older.
I got so excited to see another post from you, AG!
I also have glasses in addition to having asthma. I’m mildly lactose intolerant and have flat feet. And circulation problems which make my fingers turn numb and white when it’s really cold – lucky for me, I seem to have made it thru this winter without my hands freezing up! yay!
You’re lucky for having a sister! You look like you two have a lot of fun together. I have two brothers – who also have asthma, but having a sister always seemed like something special.
Wow, I feel the same way sometimes! I don’t have stomach problems thankfully. But I do have glasses and asthma (duh) and allergies. And my sister is the healthiest girl I’ve ever met! My brother is also the healthiest guy ever. It’s hard not to get annoyed at that.
But like you I count my blessings, we could be stuck with way harder things.
Also, when I’m having a bad hair day I also try hard to wear my contacts because I think glasses AND a bad hair day is just too awful!
PS you can email me anytime, your mom has my address.
You sound a lot like my sister and I. Growing up I had hearing problems, glasses since I was too small to remember, the asthma of course, eczema, caught every cold going around… the list seemed kind of endless.. and she was always fine.
Funny enough, she hated being the only one in the family not to wear glasses, until the day she was told she needed them too, when she changed her mind!
I wear contacts now though, and I love them. I really hate it if I can’t wear them, and have to go to work in my glasses. I ride my bike to work, so every day is a bad hair day!
The benefits of living in Canada and being in university allow me to wear toques on bad hair days
.
I’ve got asthma, glasses, next to no vision in my left eye, and pretty bad vision in my right eye. I have orthopedic issues, too–my left leg is longer than my right leg, and my right arm doesn’t straighten. I don’t even notice most of it, because aside from the asthma, I’ve had all the other stuff my whole life. But, most of this is because of being a preemie (which, your mom tells me you were too, AG).
But, I have no siblings to compare myself to
.
Ditto with Danielle on the e-mail thing if you’d like–I LOVE e-mails
.
Hi AG!
Your glasses really suit you, totally cool and ditto I wear contacts or glasses too!
Plus I have stomach problems-repeated gastritis. I’m coeliac which means I can’t eat anything containing regular flour and have to eat Gluten Free. It is not always an easy choice to make especially as my favourite thing in the whole foodie world is Pizza! This makes me really sick, doubled up in stomach pain and with repeated trips running to the bathroom. Not fun, and yep, like you can keep me up all night.
Chocolate gives me migraines.
Oh dear I feel like a walking medical disaster here, but if the truth be known most people have a whole bunch of stuff as well as their asthma, but the asthma always seems to be the one we talk about. I just say I’m an asthmatic and need to eat GF!
You take care though-and remember we are all equal underneath-you’re just even more special on the top!
Byeeee
Susannah
